Ambien is given to help people with insomnia fall and stay asleep. It is classified as a sedative-hypnotic medicine and works by changing certain chemicals in the brain that may be out of balance in persons who have sleep issues. Because of the risk of dependence and tolerance, Ambien is often only suggested for short-term use. It is usually recommended for a few weeks or fewer to alleviate acute sleep problems.
