How to sharpen a razor? - LavaLove
Unlike other shaving devices such as the electric razor or classic shavers, the use of the razor removes every millimeter of hair and leaves the surface smooth if used correctly, however, before you start shaving with one it is important to know how to sharpen it properly, as these devices tend to wear out over the months. The use of the razor has many advantages that do not have the use of other devices for shaving, as there will not be a change of blades as you have to do with classic shavers, all we have to do is keep the one we already have in the razor and sharpen it every time it is necessary after wear, this is an advantage for us a saving in costs of blades. In addition to this, devices such as electric shavers require more frequent maintenance, and there is always the risk of damaging the machine, which is also a waste of money. It is for these reasons and many more that the razor is the best option for a cleaner shave without having to spend on blades or be afraid of damaging them. HOW OFTEN DOES A RAZOR NEED TO BE SHARPENED? It depends on how well you take care of your razor, if you have been taking proper care of your razor and have been polishing it consistently, it could be after a year or more, as it is recommended to polish the blade after every month of use. The most important thing is to test if our razor is cutting the hair correctly or if it leaves us with a very uncomfortable scrape on the skin, this would immediately indicate that the blade of our razor is already worn and needs to be sharpened. It also depends on the quality of the blade, in case it is not stainless steel make sure to store it in a non-humid place to prevent the blade from rusting. Materials needed to sharpen the razor To effectively sharpen a razor, you will need only two tools: a sharpening stone and a sharpener (also called a softener). The sharpening stone is the most commonly used tool for sharpening any blade and leaving it well polished. This tool has the advantage that due to its hardness it is virtually impossible to damage or wear and therefore only needs to be purchased once. The sharpener is a leather strap that can be used after having sharpened the razor with the sharpening stone. The main function of the sharpener is to keep the edge polished and remove any trace of sediment that may have been left after sharpening with the stone. The use of each of these tools will depend on the level of wear that the blade has, although it is advisable to use both when the razor is very worn (first the whetstone to remove the edge and then the sharpener to polish it) you can also choose to use only the sharpener when the wear is not much. If you’re in a hurry, but need to shave, using the sharpener would require less time to get the razor-sharp enough to use it quickly. However, if your razor has worn a lot, then sharpening with the stone is the process that should be done first and then you can follow up with polishing with the strop to make sure the blade still holds its edge. How to sharpen a razor with a sharpening stone First, you must place the razor flat on the stone so that you will get an angle at which the blade must move to sharpen the razor by rubbing against the stone. After placing the razor on the stone, make sure that each stroke is an even stroke across the stone, tilting the razor slightly from the sharp side of the blade to ensure that the entire length of the blade moves across the stone. Also make sure to keep the edge of the blade on the stone while avoiding applying additional pressure, allowing the roughness of the stone and the weight of the razor to do all the work. At the end of each action, reverse the sharpening razor to the other side and perform an X-sharpening action on the blade. It is also important to consider that sharpening should not be exaggerated, as sharpening too many times or for too long can have a detrimental effect on the desired blade, where the blade wears to such an extent that when it is sharpened it can be dangerous to sharpen the shave. How to sharpen a razor with STROP A strip consists of two components on each side, a leather side, and a cloth side. The cloth side is responsible for removing anything that could cause damage to the leather, such as small pieces of metal left behind during the honing process. The leather side, which has a smoother surface, on the other hand, is responsible for polishing the knife. Grasp the end of the band, pull it tightly in your direction, and slide the blade along the band, away from the edge, so that the blade is away from you, just as you would do with a sharpening stone, but this time you must keep the blade at a small height so that the cutting edge touches the leather properly. As with the sharpening stone, after the entire stroke is complete, reverse the blade and apply the same stroke to the other side by sliding the blade back towards you. Repeat this process about 10 to 15 times. As with the sharpening stone, it is recommended to make the blade’s carry-in and carry-out movements X-shaped. What grit should I use to sharpen a straight razor? For a straight razor, we would recommend a #4000 and #8000 grit honing stone to bring a normal razor back up shave ready. An extremely blunt razor may need a coarser stone, to begin with. Practice is required to become a razor-honing master, so take things slow and let the stone do the work. How often should you sharpen your straight razor? A straight razor should be honed after 60-70 shaves or roughly every 6 months. If your blade requires honing more frequently then the stropping technique should be reevaluated. How do I know if my straight razor is sharp enough? A quick, easy way to test the sharpness of your blade is to take a strand of hair and test it on the blade. Either hold the hair hanging down and simply tap the hair with the blade or hold the blade upright and drop the hair onto the blade. If the hair “pops” from a simple touch on the edge then your blade is sharp. How do you sharpen a straight razor without a whetstone? Working with this item is easy; attach one end to a fixed object and hold the strop to ensure it is taut without any give. Use your dominant hand to hold your straight razor. Pull the razor blade down the entire strop length while adding fair pressure to the process. Why do you strop a straight razor? One thing to remember is stropping a straight razor does not “sharpen” the blade at all. Its “polishes” or straightens the microscopic fin of the blade that gets damaged when cutting. In short, it brings the blade back in alignment. It’s very important to strop either right before or just after you begin to shave. Can you sharpen a straight razor with a leather belt? No. A leather belt can be used to strop, not hone or sharpen the blade. There is a major difference between these two terms. After using a straight razor a few times, the blade’s edge tends to be curled or bent to a side, resulting in its dull cutting edge and ineffective performance. Is a straight razor better than a safety razor? To give the shortest possible answer – a straight razor gives the closest shave! While both a straight razor and a safety razor can give close shaves, however, a straight razor will still give you the closest shave of all razors.
