Kasturba Medical College (KMC) in Mangalore was founded in 1955. It is a component of MAHE, Manipal, which was founded by Dr. TMA Pai. In 1958, the Medical Council of India recognized it. It was quickly acknowledged by the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom, the Malaysian Medical Council, and the Australian Medical Council. It also received full accreditation from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) in December 2011, a first in India. It was India's first self-financing medical college, as well as the country's first institution to implement the Public Private Partnership model. The college was first affiliated with Karnataka University, then Mysore University in 1965, and Mangalore University in 1980.
