I'm old enough that I remember the last time this was true, as I flew American to/from LGW late-summer 2003, during the final few months of that route. I also was happy to arrive at FRA, where we have previous experience taking the ICE-Bahn to Berlin. Did you know that you can book a train ticket through the Lufthansa website? The trains are faster than five years ago, so it's a great option for getting to your final destination.
My only significant complaint is related to seat comfort. In Europe we will fly business class. But, traveling across the ocean, premium economy saves so much money! We had plenty of room, but for some strange reason, the horizontal portion of the actual seat in this Airbus A330-300 was so hard that eventually I had to sit on a pillow to get relief. Compared to our experience on LOT Airlines (from Chicago) in pre-pandemic times, I'm sorry to say the Lufthansa seat (and the food, too) really was a step downward.
What did I think of the rest of the experience? Check-in went slowly, and the flight departed an hour late. Given the heat of the day, and desire to keep passengers from lingering too long in the jetway, this was ok by me. The airline staff was relatively friendly, given all the stress they must be feeling this summer. The previously requested gluten-free meal for Therese H. was was handled perfectly, without confusion.
Thanks to all who helped bring Lufthansa to STL. I sincerely hope this direct-flight-to-Europe experiment becomes permanent."
